The small coastal town of Marakovka. It lay on the Pacific coast of Eastern Russia, and for the most part, nothing extraordinary happened here. The small community was home to a moderately sized port, and the fishing industry blossomed in this area. Each sunny morning, the fishermen would sail off in to the waters like an army, grabbing as many fish as they could before the weather grew cold. Alexey Zenobikov's father had been a fisherman, before a stroke had sent him to an early grave at 50. He was just a teenager then, although his Uncle had been there to help both him and his mother through the difficult times.

Two years ago, his Uncle had came in to a bit of money, and bought himself a nice house a few miles inland. While his mother travelled with his Uncle to a new area to live, Alexey had decided to stay here. After all, he was a soldier now, and had a job to do. It may not be the most exciting, and he may not be shooting a rifle every day, but he felt that he was doing his part for the country.

His job, consisted of manning a military radio station that had been installed in to an old lighthouse at the very tip of the rocks to the south-east of the town. The natural pier extended out in to the water for a good distance, about a five minute walk from town. He wasn't alone. Oh, no. If he was alone, he would have probably went mad at sitting in here all day, every day. The radio had to be supervised twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. It was the most powerful radio in the entire Pacific coast, and could pick up radiowaves from hundreds of miles away. The radio took up the entire wall of the small ground floor room, with a chair sitting beside it and numerous documents and pieces of paper scattered on the desk in front of the large machine.

They had been both trained in maintenance, as it had a habit of breaking down regularly. Well, after all, it had been installed while the Cold War was still going strong, and almost as old as the twenty-six year old Alexey was. Or was it older?

Upstairs was where the beds were. The problem with this radio station was the lack of privacy. And having a man and a woman sharing the same living quarters did have problems. Getting changed, for example, could prove awkward. The same went for when they showered. Alexey had forgotten plenty of times, that there was a woman in the next room as he walked out of the bathroom.

For one day every week, usually a Sunday, their shift was covered by Vitaly "Ally" Kuprienko, a young marine that was a crew member of the small, recon submarine docked at Marakovka. It was a welcome relief for Alexey when he showed up at the door, with a book in his hand. It meant the pair were allowed to have a walk outside together, and do things they usually couldn't do inside the small living quarters of the lighthouse.

It was 3pm, and Alexey had been sitting at the radio for five hours now. As usual, nothing but the faint hum of distorted silence. She was upstairs, sleeping, although the footsteps causing the ceiling to creak indicated she was now up and probably coming down to keep him company. As usual, the Russian wore his dull green uniform, although his shirt was unbuttoned and rolled up at the sleeves, showing the white T-shirt underneath.

Life in the lighthouse with a man was sometimes rather stressful, but Nikita Kaminski could handle it. It wasn't as though she couldn't stand him. He was actually good company. She didn't appreciate those times when he'd walk out of the bathroom, naked, it always made her blush, and turn away.

Though the job she had to do, seemed rather boring sometimes, but she did enjoy it, gave her a purpose. It wasn't pointless at all, originally, when she'd been assigned to the radio, she wasn't thrilled, it wasn't her style to just sit around and wait for something to happen. But after so long, she'd gotten used to it, even liked it most of the time.

She'd taken a nap for a little while, and woke up eventually. Sitting up in her bed, she fixed her hair back into its conservative bun, and straightened her clothes before heading down stairs and joining Alexey at the radio. "Anything come in?" she asked him, taking a seat beside him.

"Same old rubbish. Silence. Static. A little bit of noise. Then it goes dead again. I can't even remember the last time I heard something from this thing. A few weeks? A few months? Got to have been sometime last year, at least. Sometimes I keep thinking it's not been switched on, maybe the plug's fallen out of the back. Guess that's just wishful thinking, but." Alexey sighed, and as soon as Nikita sat down next to him, he began to take a little stroll around the room to give himself some exercise. Much needed, he should add. Sitting in a chair for hours and hours didn't help your body, and it caused aches in his legs from time to time.

He was hungry. So when he opened the small refrigerator in the corner of the room, he was extremely disappointed to discover it hadn't been restocked yet, and everything was either out of date, or was simply missing. What had happened to it all? Had Ally been tucking in to their food again without telling them? God damn that marine.

"We need more grub." He spoke, looking back over his shoulder as he crouched in the corner. "You want to get it, or will I?" The market wasn't very far away, an old traditional area with stalls and bazaars that had fresh fruit and other necessities. It was a fifteen minute walk, but it gave them the excuse for fresh air.

Nikita leaned back in her seat, listening to him. “Ah, pity there’s nothing new.” A sigh escaped her lips. “Has it really been that long?” She turned in her seat to glance to him. Sometimes she felt like she would go crazy, he was the only person she’d see for hours, unless she went out for something, or when they got a chance for a break. But at least he wasn’t too bad of company.

“You can go if you want. You look like you need the break. Unless you want me to, although I don’t see it as fair, seeing how you let me sleep a little bit.” She offered him a smile, before turning back to the radio. “Don’t get lost though,” she teased, playfully.
